1860

The Beginning

William Bentley aged 13 completes his apprentice and works for Henry Haynes, a local brushmaker and later goes on to marry his daughter Helen, and eventually taking over the business.

Rapid Growth

After rapid growth, the family who already owned 30 Leopold street also purchased 40 Leopold to provide more work space.

Our First Shop

The family business moves to Ashby square, where they had a yard with workshops to the rear and a shop. William and his wife, Helen, have 13 children- twelve boys and the last a girl – 4 of the sons became brush makers in their own right.

Charles Bentley & Son is Born

Thomas ran a successful business and in 1910 was in a position to retire, after looking for a possible purchaser he found that one of his younger brothers, Charles, was interested. The business was sold to Charles for £250 and Charles Bentley & Son was born. Charles hung a brand new brass plate on the front wall of his house, this brass plate can still be seen at our head office today.

4th Generation

Ray, the fifth member of the Bentley family to run Charles Bentley and Son, strikes up an equal partnership with his wife and two sons Charles and Robert. This was also around the same time that the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) opened in Birmingham. Charles Bentley and Son were offered half of another companies stand on which to exhibit, the show was a great success and Bentley still exhibit at the same show to this day.

5th Generation

Mary & Ray handed over their partnership to their son’s Charles and Robert. Charles Bentley then became Managing Director. Charles Bentley is still the Managing Director to this day.

New Warehouse

In 1992 the family business outgrew their premises and moved to Central House on Jubilee Drive, Loughborough. The 44,000 square foot office and warehousing facilities are the company headquarters for the next 17 years were they can produce, dispatch and stock hold 100’s of different products for the first time.

Re-branding

The company becomes Ltd and is re branded for the first time with the original green logo changing style and colour, now the unique Bentley ‘B’ is promoted on packaging and products.

Bentley Worldwide

In 2008 the Charles Bentley Head Office moves across the road from Jubilee Drive to Monarch Way. The multi million pound investment is essential due to further rapid expansion. 2008 also saw Charles Bentley expand Worldwide. With factories in Sri Lanka and China, and offices in Hong Kong Bentley are able to offer innovative products at competitive prices. We also expanded to North America, with offices in North Carolina and warehouse facilities in Kansas.

Celebrating 150 Years

150 years on and Charles Bentley have gone from a humble beginning and a small shop in England to a global enterprise and to celebrate we held a sequence of events throughout the year. Charles Bentley, Managing Director, adds “during our 150th year we wanted to celebrate with a variety of events that both help our local community whilst putting our products to good use. Whilst at the same time recognise the value of our customers and suppliers”. These events included the Charles Bentley Big Tidy Up (community litter pick scheme), a student design competition to design a new pattern for the 2010 brush range, garden broom giveaway incentive to encourage local authority garden waste recycling and more.

Most Outstanding Exporter

2010 saw Charles Bentley presented with a gold award as the “most outstanding exporter” of the year by the Sri Lankan National Chamber of Exports (NCE).

One Of Britain’s Brightest Businesses

At the end of 2011 Charles Bentley were named as one of Britain’s Brightest Businesses. The Telegraph published a report to celebrate the 1,000 mid-sized companies which have weathered the economic storm and are set to be the foundation of the UK’s recovery. 2011 also saw Charles Bentley launch patterned wooden brushware – The first company worldwide to design and produce such brushware further boasting their innovation capabilities.

Manufacturing Excellence Award

Entered into the Manufacturing Excellence category for the 2012 awards Charles Bentley and Son Ltd were presented with the ‘highly commended’ award. James Bentley 6th generation family member and General Manager, received the award on behalf of the Bentley family. The awards focus on how family values help drive businesses forward and also review Company manufacturing capabilities.

Finalists In Two Categories

At this year’s awards Charles Bentley were finalists in two categories, The Family Business of the Year and The Manufacturing Excellence award. At the awards evening they were awarded Highly Commended in both categories.

State-Of-The-Art Manufacturing

Charles Bentley make a huge investment in a state-of-the-art manufacturing processes at a cost of almost £400,000 having received funding from Leicester & Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership to safeguard manufacturing jobs in the region. In order to access the funding, Charles Bentley & Son has had to protect ten jobs and create a further eight opportunities. The fully automatic, CNC controlled, brush making machine can produce 1200 brush tuffs per minute and has increased production capacity by almost one third. New 202,000ft² Warehouse

Loughborough-based manufacturer Charles Bentley & Son has purchased a new 202,000 sq ft warehouse in a deal worth £6m, in order to accommodate its rapidly expanding e-commerce brand, BuyDirect4U.

Launch Of Dropship

Charles Bentley expand their operation with the launch of a Dropship service, enabling retailers to easily expand their online home, garden and leisure product ranges without major upfront investment. With the use of their 202,000 sq ft warehouse, they effectively stock, pack and dispatch products directly to customers on behalf of retailers who are looking to explore new product lines.
