1860

1st Generation: The Beginning

William Bentley aged 14 completes his apprentice with brushmaker Thomas Chesterton, one of many brush makers in Loughborough. After the business folded in 1863 William worked for Henry Haynes, a local brushmaker and later goes on to marry his daughter Helen, and eventually taking over the business.

Our First Shop

The family business moves to Ashby square, where they had a yard with workshops to the rear and a shop. William and his wife, Helen, have 13 children- twelve boys and the last a girl – 4 of the sons became brush makers in their own right.

Workshop In The Back Garden

William and Helens eldest son Thomas buys 30 Leopold Street where he builds a workshop in the rear yard and starts his own business. A Brass plate is hung on the front wall of the house.

2nd Generation: Charles Bentley

After running a successful business Thomas was in a position to retire, after looking for a possible purchaser he found that one of his younger brothers, Charles, was interested. The business was sold to Charles for £250.

New Ownership

After purchasing the business for £250 Charles updates the original brass plate on the front wall of his house, which can still be seen at our head office today.

3rd Generation: Charles (Charlie) Bentley

After serving for 3 years in the Army Charles’ son Charles (Charlie) returns home and takes over the business, and gets married to Annie Simmons 6 years later.

4th Generation – Ray Bentley

At the age of sixteen Ray Bentley leaves school and is conscripted into the fleet for two years. He later on joins the family business.

Expansion In The Business

On the 23rd March 1950 Ray and Mary marry before expanding the business by building a large workshop in the back garden.

New Opportunities

Ray, forms an equal partnership with his wife and two sons Charles and Robert. This was also around the same time that the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) opened in Birmingham. Charles Bentley and Son were offered half of another companies stand on which to exhibit, the show was a great success and Bentley still exhibit at the same show to this day.

Further Expansion: Derby Road

Due to further expansion the company purchases 37 Derby road for £75,000. They soon replaced the original building with a brand new warehouse and office space.

5th Generation

Mary & Ray retire and pass the partnership to their sons Charles and Robert. Charles eventually becomes the manager director, which he is to this day.

New Warehouse

In 1992 the family business outgrew their premises and moved to Central House on Jubilee Drive, Loughborough. The 44,000 square foot office and warehousing facilities are the company headquarters for the next 17 years were they can produce, dispatch and stock hold 100’s of different products for the first time.

Re-branding

The company becomes Ltd and is re branded for the first time with the original green logo changing style and colour, now the unique Bentley ‘B’ is promoted on packaging and products.

Bentley Worldwide

In 2008 Charles Bentley relocate their head offices across the road to Monarch Way. The multi-million pound investment is essential due to further expansion. 2008 also saw Charles Bentley expand Worldwide with factories in Sri Lanka and China, as well as offices in Hong Kong. The expansion ensued that Charles Bentley are able to offer innovative products at competitive prices.

BuyDirect4U

The BuyDirect4U brand is formed. The business originally started off intending to sell on the excess stock from Charles Bentley however business continued to improve and money was invested into new products. Now BuyDirect4U specialise in home, garden & leisure products.

Celebrating 150 Years

150 years on and Charles Bentley have gone from a humble beginning and a small shop in England to a global enterprise and to celebrate we held a sequence of events throughout the year. To celebrate the company holds a number of community, educational and environmental events within the local area to mark the occassion.

Most Outstanding Exporter

2010 saw Charles Bentley presented with a gold award as the “most outstanding exporter” of the year by the Sri Lankan National Chamber of Exports (NCE).

One Of Britain’s Brightest Businesses

At the end of 2011 Charles Bentley were named as one of Britain’s Brightest Businesses. The Telegraph published a report to celebrate the 1,000 mid-sized companies which have weathered the economic storm and are set to be the foundation of the UK’s recovery. 2011 also saw Charles Bentley launch patterned wooden brushware – The first company worldwide to design and produce such brushware further boasting their innovation capabilities.

Manufacturing Excellence Award

Entered into the Manufacturing Excellence category for the 2012 awards Charles Bentley and Son Ltd were presented with the ‘highly commended’ award. James Bentley 6th generation family member and General Manager, received the award on behalf of the Bentley family. The awards focus on how family values help drive businesses forward and also review Company manufacturing capabilities.

Finalists In Two Categories

At this year’s awards Charles Bentley were finalists in two categories, The Family Business of the Year and The Manufacturing Excellence award. At the awards evening they were awarded Highly Commended in both categories.

Further Expansion At North Road

Charles Bentley & Son has purchased a new 202,000 sq ft warehouse in order to accommodate its rapidly expanding e-commerce brand, BuyDirect4U.

6th Generation

James Bentley and Naomi Steel strenghten the team at the helm of the Monarch way firm after appointing 6th generation directors.
